The digital age has driven immeasurable changes to every aspect of life that anybody could ever have imagined. The sports industry has seen dramatic shifts, going from limited TV coverage to being able to stream live events and games for countless numbers of sports from around the world.

The emergence of the World Wide Web, followed by social media channels and TV streaming have transformed not only viewing options but how fans can engage with their favorite teams and players.

Before the digital era, fans only had the option to watch NFL matches on a select number of games chosen by the broadcaster and they could get highlights on the evening news channels. If fans didn’t have tickets to the game, they often wouldn’t get to see any of the action or at most, they had the chance to see the highlights hours after the games finished.

Fast forward to 2025 and every game is available to stream through various streaming providers. And you can now watch the NFL from anywhere around the world. The latest Super Bowl is a prime example, as it was shown in over 130 countries.

Here’s some of the biggest differences between the pre-digital era and the NFL fan experience of today:

TV Coverage

In two decades, NFL viewing has moved from limited match broadcasting to having the option to stream any NFL game of your choice. Streaming channels such as NFL Game Pass, Amazon Prime and ESPN+ allow fans to pay subscriptions to watch their team whenever they play.

While the availability to watch matches is the biggest revolution, the quality of coverage has also seen a huge improvement. With higher quality cameras, multiple camera angles and HD TVs to watch the game on, you feel much closer to the action.

You have pitchside cameras, the Al–22 high angle to show the full field, skycams that are suspended on cables running across the field, and many more different angles to show various aspects of the game detail.

TV companies generate huge revenues and it means they can invest it into the technology and can employ expert commentary panels, typically including former players to analyze games before, during and after matches.

Fans have the choice to watch games in bars to take in the atmosphere with fellow fans and enjoy the game with friends instead of watching at home alone.

Social Media Engagement

The popularity of social media has had many benefits for fans too. They can follow their team and favorite players on Instagram, watch instant highlights on Tik-Tok and even get a glimpse of players’ lives away from the field.

You also have insights provided in NFL podcasts, perhaps most notably the New Heights podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce. Prior to this, fans could read articles about players in newspapers but had little other options for insights.

Fans can join online communities to discuss their favorite team and join fantasy leagues to build even more social involvement.

Betting Options

Betting Options for the NFL

Mobile sports betting has also added to the fan experience, with many NFL fans enjoying the excitement of backing their team with money or predicting results based on their knowledge of the sport.

Historically, bettors had to go into a physical bookies to place bets but now fans can bet on all types of sports, games, outcomes and bet types from their mobile device. Fans can place an NFL bet just before a game starts or can even bet in-play. There are so many betting markets and bet lines to choose from now, from touchdown scorers to something obscure like whether a player or coach will cry during the national anthem at the Super Bowl!

Access to Data

With the endless realms of the internet, fans can access all types of data, either to feed their curiosity or to assist with researching form before placing NFL bets. They can watch coverage of games on YouTube to study games in more detail and there are AI-powered analysis breakdowns to build a deeper knowledge of the sport.

Fans of today have access to so much data that they are considerably more tactically astute than the average fan was 20 years ago.

These are just a few examples of how the NFL fan experience has changed but with digital innovations constantly arriving, there is no end to how much it will evolve. One exciting new addition is watching games using VR headsets, allowing viewers to choose their preferred camera angles and many more options.

Who knows what tech-driven possibilities NFL fans will have on demand in another 20 years time with so much progress experienced in the last 20.
